Steering for Control

Counter steering might feel weird at first, but it's the secret move most riders make instinctively. Master this and other techniques.

Accurate use of steering allows greater fine control of our machine and allows us to maximise our progress without impacting our safety.

Your Mentor will help explain the basic physics behind how steering application should be applied to get the machine to handle accurately and under full control.

Our machine turns through different methods at different speeds.

At low-speed steering is achieved through turning the handlebars to the degree required in the direction required to make the turn.

As speed increases a technique, known as Positive or Counter steering, is used. This involves pushing the handlebar on the side we want to turn forwards a small often imperceptible distance which causes the machine to lean in that direction and starts to generate the forces needed to turn in that direction.

This Positive steering is something that everyone who has ridden a two-wheel vehicle has used but many do not even realise they are doing it!

Your mentor will be able to demonstrate its use and expand on how it can be used especially in emergency situations, to generate a faster steering response and increase lean angle to help recover certain situations.

They will also discuss how you can utilise weight transference through use of movement of the rider and the application of metered power / brakes to help when negotiating certain situations when cornering.
